Here's a post to remember!
Your Brain on Exercise
Tony Horton
There was an astonishing article in Newsweek a few weeks back that just blew my mind/brain/cranium/noggin. Here's what I've learned from this article and further research. We all know that working out and exercising do amazing things for our body, and the benefits, other than weight loss and getting fit, are endless. Most of us also know that when our hearts, legs, and lungs get pumping, we feel much better than if we did nothing. Turns out that doing 20 minutes or more of cardiovascular and/or high-paced resistance workouts affects every aspect of our lives. The great thing about the Newsweek article is that it really laid out the scientific findings over the last few years. Here's the scope. When you're forced to pull more oxygen into the body through exercise, you break what's called "the blood-brain barrier." It happens when you climb a long flight of stairs and when you're busting through any kind of workout that gets your heart rate pumping. This oxygen-filled blood makes its way into the temporal lobe of the brain. Inside that temporal lobe is an area called the hippocampus. Inside the hippocampus lies the seahorse-shaped area known as the dentate gyrus. As you exercise, these oxygen-filled blood cells rush into this area of the brain. A chemical/protein called IGF-1 is formed and released inside the dentate gyrus, which ramps up another chemical/molecule called BDNF; both IGF-1 and BDNF are "Miracle-grow" for the brain.
Studies with kids right up to seniors have proven that high-paced workouts (www.milliondollarbody.com Power 90®, Power Half Hour®, Power 90® Master Series, P90X®, Tony & the Kids!, etc.) cause the release of these chemicals into the brain. Combine this with even more "brain drugs" like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine and you've got yourself a feel-good party in your head. Aerobic physical movement causes the release of these chemicals, and they all help you focus and give you energy when you need it. They also help you relax and rest properly. It's like a homemade chemistry set inside your skull that produces a cocktail that simulates the effects of Prozac and Ritalin. Children who play outdoors more often score better on tests than kids who don't. Regular physical activity improves memory, mood, and problem-solving abilities. Consistent exercise raises self-esteem and decreases anxiety. Study after study has proven that people who exercise 5 to 6 days a week greatly decrease their need for psychotherapeutic drugs. If your brain goes without regular bouts of exercise, the hippocampus will shrink and erode, which can lead to neurological illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease. When the dentate gyrus is stimulated, neuro-genesis or neuro-plasticity occurs. I'm not talking about just slowing the aging process, I'm telling you that the brain creates new cells through exercise—brand new cells that assist in the reversal of aging. If you're looking for the fountain of youth, you can find it inside your head every time you exercise for more than 20 minutes. TMT X 2 anyone?

Here's a heck of a thing gleaned from another blog post . . . read it and weep!
ExercisePosted Mon, Jun 01, 2009, 12:42 pm PDT
My "two scoops won't hurt and neither will these french fries" approach to eating doesn't lend itself well to swimsuit season. Although the beach treks may have begun, there is time to make change. So, let me have it. What's that ice cream going to cost me in workout minutes? To tell us is Charles Stuart Platkin, also known as the Diet Detective. He is the author of five books and and host of WE TV's I Want To Save Your Life. Here is his report on what some of our chain-food favorites should cost us in time spent doing common exercises...
Note: Calorie content of foods are based on official website information at the time of publication. Minutes of exercise are averages based on a 155-pound person. The greater the weight of the person the more calories burned per minute. DONUTDunkin Donuts Chocolate Frosted Donut (230 calories)59 minutes of walking (3 mph).
BREAKFAST SANDWICHMcDonald's Egg McMuffin (300 calories)32 minutes of running (5 mph).
CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIEPanera Chocolate Chipper (440 calories)62 minutes of biking (10-11.9 mph).
PIZZA Pizza Hut Large Hand-Tossed Style Cheese Pizza (1 slice; 320 calories)39 minutes of swimming (slow to moderate laps).
CINNAMON ROLLStarbucks Cinnamon Roll (500 calories, varies by location)85 minutes of dancing.
HAMBURGERBurger King Original Whopper With Cheese (770 calories)94 minutes of swimming (slow to moderate laps).
BROWNIEAu Bon Pain Chocolate Chip Brownie (380 calories).129 minutes of yoga (Hatha style).
FRIESWendy's Large French Fries (540 calories)77 minutes of biking (10-11.9 mph).
ICE CREAMHäagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream (0.5 cup; 270 calories) 29 minutes of running (5 mph).BURRITOTaco Bell Burrito Supreme, Beef (410 calories)70 minutes of dancing.

Lessons I learned from my dog:
1. She always wants and she receives not because she's earned it but because I love her.
2. She never worries. She just wants and receives.
3. She shows what she wants. And she seems to get. (Besides who wants a wet floor)
So the question stands. What is it that you want? Maybe a better you. Check out the links below.
Get fit! Feel Great! - Have you got 10 minutes a day? It's easier than you think!!!

Worth the read!
Here's a reprint form the blog of Tony Horton and incredible Beachbody trainer. This is so true!
Food. It's that thing that's killing you, slowly.
Fitness won't solve your problems. Getting free of your food addictions will. When it comes to healthy living, exercise for regular people is relatively new. The average Joe and Joanne didn't really start exercising until the 50s and 60s. Guys like Joe Weider and Jack LaLaine started the revolution after WWII and it's been growing (too slowly) ever since. As the obesity trends began to rise in the 70s, jogging and nautilus became more popular. During this time various companies were selling goofy ways to lose weight. For some reason we quickly forgot that eating whole foods was the key to maintaining our weight. As food became more processed over the the past few decades we used other processed foods to help us lose weight. It was (and still is) a vicious cycle of addiction. The gain, lose, gain epidemic continues. I read a funny blurb the other day which clearly and plainly stated that if you avoided food with mascots you'll lose weight. Goodbye Count Chocula! Our grandparents didn't have gym memberships, spinning classes and fitness DVDs. They ate healthy whole foods and spent four times more time outside than we do. If your grandparents were obese it was a novelty for sure. Our behavior and habits put food-porn companies in business and we also have the power to destroy them by not eating their poison. You control what goes in your mouth, no one else. Find ways to make healthy whole food taste good and eat it. Period! With Love and compassion,Tony Horton
